Brownfield sites get affordable living makeover in well-connected town
A patchwork of brownfield sites in one of the region's best-connected towns is being transformed into new affordable housing. 12 unused garages sites in Mildenhall are to be turned into 19 affordable rent homes and three large off-street parking areas for local residents.
The development is a collaboration between Flagship Homes and contractor EN Suiter, and is being part-funded by Homes England. Additionally, West Suffolk Council has paid for accessibility adaptions to some of the homes.
The goal of the site is to redevelop the vacant garages, enhance the appearance of the area, and build more affordable homes for local people after demand for the garages fell over the past few years.

The homes will be powered by eco-friendly measures such as air-source heat pumps and solar panels, and there will be a mix of one and two-bed bungalows, maisonettes, and two, three- and four-bedroom houses.
Flagship Homes project manager Simon Floor commented, “I am very much looking forward to seeing these garage sites transformed into new homes for the local area, as well as what will be a very successful partnership with EN Suiter.
These homes, and the extra parking, will be a huge improvement to the area that we and everyone involved, including local residents, can’t wait to see. Steven Gould, managing quantity surveyor at EN Suiter, added, “This is our second project with Flagship and we’re thrilled to keep working with them. It’s really nice to see this project taking shape, and it’s something we know will make a huge difference to the local community.
It’s a big project with new homes and parking areas across so many sites and we’re really looking forward to seeing it come together for the people who need it.”
Another of the building sites to become affordable homes in Mildenhall
Mildenhall, a market town along the A11 'growth corridor', boasts easy connections to Cambridge and Norwich as well as Bury St Edmunds. The homes should be finished by summer 2025 and will then be managed by Samphire Homes, one of Flagship Group’s three housing associations.
