Blueflame partner with Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Councils to install renewable energy heating in Stowmarket

Blueflame installed a brand-new renewable energy heating system at Mason Court, a series of properties in Mendlesham, near Stowmarket. The area, which is owned and operated by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils (BMSDC), consists of 20 one-bedroom flats, along with communal areas for people over the age of 60.

Given their rural location, the properties previously relied on a mixture of electric warm air heating and storage heaters. Blueflame were therefore asked to evaluate the optimum renewable energy system to replace the existing framework.

Special consideration was given both to the design of the site, which was long and narrow, but also to the noise of using a communal heat pump system. This is because the plant would need to be in a central location alongside the property boundary.

A sound survey discounted the possibility of such a large central plant and so, after consultation with the various manufacturers, an alternate design was submitted that uses 20 individual heat pumps, one for each flat and a further three heat pumps to heat communal areas.

James Mealing, Director at Blueflame, explained: “The system allows every tenant to control their own space and a much more even temperature throughout, compared to the old storage heaters. The benefits of the new system are annual savings of approximately 30.6 tonnes of CO2 and a significant reduction in operating costs. We were pleased to be appointed as the main contractor to ensure that Mason Court’s residents will stay warm for years to come. It will also help to significantly reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in this picturesque corner of rural Suffolk.”
